In 2020, picture book author Baek Hee-na received the Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award (ALMA)—one of the most prestigious honors in children’s literature, often referred to as the “Nobel Prize for children’s literature.” She was the first Korean recipient of the award. Established in 2002 by the Swedish government in memory of Pippi Longstocking’s creator, Astrid Lindgren, the award recognizes authors, illustrators, and organizations that have made outstanding contributions to the advancement of children’s literature and the promotion of children’s rights.
