Hayanghyanggyo Local Confucian School

Local Confucian schools, called hyanggyo in Korean, are public education institutions of the Goryeo (918-1392) and Joseon (1392-1910) periods. They were established nationwide to function as local shrines for Confucius and other sages and to promote Confucian education and nurture elites in local districts. Students learned about literature including poetry composition, Confucian Classics, and history.

The exact information about when this local Confucian school was first established is unknown. It was burned down during the Japanese invasions of 1592-1598. The buildings were rebuilt in the early 17th century. The school underwent a large-scale renovation during the reign of King Yeongjo (r. 1724-1776). Since then, the various buildings in the complex have undergone several repairs and renovations.

The school complex, from front to back, includes a main gate, a lecture hall called Myeongnyundang, two dormitories, an inner gate, a main shrine called Daeseongjeon, and other auxiliary buildings.

Daeseongjeon Shrine of Hayanghyanggyo Local Confucian School

Daeseongjeon is a shrine, located within a local Confucian school, that houses the spirit tablets of Confucian sages and men of virtue.

Daeseongjeon Shrine of Hayanghyanggyo Local Confucian School enshrines a total of 25 spirit tablets: five great Confucian sages including Confucius, as well as 20 men of virtue, including two from Song China, two from Silla, two from Goryeo, and 14 from Joseon

The building dates back to 1608 and was repaired several times. In 1976, it was dismantled and renovated.

Rituals for the 25 Confucian sages are held here in the second and eighth lunar months.

Myeongnyundang Lecture Hall of Hayanghyanggyo Local Confucian School

Myeongnyundang is a lecture hall located within a local Confucian school. The phrase “myeongnyun (明倫)” in the name was derived from a passage in Mencius, saying “the object of all educational institutions is to illuminate human relations.”

Lecture halls in local Confucian schools typically face outward toward the main gate, but the lecture hall of Hayanghyanggyo Local Confucian School faces inward toward the shrine in the back. Two dormitories share the courtyard with the lecture hall, and together, these buildings comprise the educational area of the school.

The lecture hall building dates back to 1622 and was repaired several times.
