Birthplace of An Jae-hong

This house was the residence of An Jae-hong (1891-1965), a politician, historian, and journalist of the early 20th century.

During the Japanese colonial period (1910-1945), An led diverse independent movements and cooperated with the Korean Provisional Government in Shanghai. He also served as a chief editor and president of the newspaper Chosun Ilbo in the 1920s and 1930s. In 1950, he was elected as a member of the National Assembly. However, he was abducted to North Korea in the same year and allegedly died in 1965.

This house consists of a women’s quarters and a men’s quarters, which were built in 1914 and 1932, respectively. The women’s quarters includes a wooden-floored hall at the center, an under-floor heated room on either side, a kitchen, and a storage space. The unique feature of this building is the direct passage between the wooden-floored hall and kitchen. The men’s quarters includes a wooden-floored hall, an under-floor heated room with narrow wooden veranda, and an elevated wooden porch.
