해설문

국문

이 건물은 원래 도산서원(陶山書院) 남쪽으로 흐르는 낙천 건너 의인리 섬마을에 있었던 초가집이다. 안동댐 건설로 인하여 현재의 위치로 이건하였다.

도토마리란 명칭은 가옥의 평면구조가 베틀의 도토마리와 유사하다고 하여 붙여진 것이다. 이 집은 3칸집의 가운데에 부엌이 있고 오른쪽에 안방, 왼쪽에 마구간과 웃방으로 구성되어 있다. 부엌은 쌍여닫이 문이 달려 있어 대문 구실을 하고 뒷벽에도 작은 쌍여닫이문이 있어서 뒤안과 장독대로 드나들게 하였다. 경북지방에만 남아 있는 주거형식으로 귀중한 자료이다.

영문

This thatched-roof house is considered a dotomarijip, meaning “warp beam house,” because its layout resembles a traditional Korean warp beam, an I-shaped roller at the back of a loom. The house has a kitchen in the center, a main room to the right, and a stable with a small room to the left. The double door of the kitchen is used as the main entrance to the house, while smaller doors at the back lead to the backyard, where earthen jars of condiments are stored. This kind of layout is effective for keeping the house warm during the winter and facilitates easy maintenance of the stable. This style of house can be found only in the Gyeongsangbuk-do area.

The exact period of this house’s construction is unknown. It was originally located in a village named Uichondong to the south of Dosanseowon Confucian Academy, before it was moved to the current site in 1976 due to the construction of Andong Dam.
