Sinpungnu Gate Pavilion

Sinpungnu is the main gate of this temporary palace. The name “Sinpungnu (新豊樓),” meaning “pavilion of New Feng,” was derived from a story of Emperor Gaozu, the founder of Han China. Born in a town named Feng ("Pung" in Korean), the emperor built a town similar to his hometown in the new royal capital and named it New Feng. King Jeongjo named the main gate of his temporary palace after Emperor Gaozu's example, as he regarded the Hwaseong Fortress area as his new hometown.

When King Jeongjo visited the temporary palace in 1795, a charity event was held in front of this gate pavilion to distribute rice to the local residents and serve porridge to the poor.

In front of Sinpungnu stands a red gate constructed of two wooden poles. Such a gate symbolically indicated the entrance to an area of significance, which included royal tombs, shrines, and government offices.
