Jaemaejeong Well, Gyeongju

This well is located at the former site of the head house of Kim Yu-sin (595-673), the most well-known general of the Silla period (57 BCE–935 CE). A head house is a residence passed down among the male successors of a family lineage.

It is said that the house was one of 35 magnificent, gilded residences in the Gyeongju area that were lived in by the true-bone rank aristocracy of Silla.

There is a story about this well in the History of the Three Kingdoms (Samguk sagi) that goes as follows. In 645, when troops from the neighboring Baekje kingdom attacked, Kim Yu-sin led the Silla forces in battle and came out victorious. On his way back to the capital to tell the queen the good news, he heard that the Baekje troops had again begun attacking, so he immediately turned around to go back into battle. On his journey, he passed by his house but initially did not stop because he was in a hurry. But after 50 steps of passing the house, he stopped his horse and asked someone to get him water from the well. Upon drinking it, he remarked that the taste is the same as he remembered. And, with a sense of relief that things at home were okay, he headed onward to battle.

The well has a depth of 5.7 m and a maximum width of 1.8 m. The top of the well is 1.2 m in diameter and is built with stones carved into the shape of bricks. It is a rare example of a square well. The monument in the pavilion next to the well marks that this is the former location of Kim Yu-sin's house. It was erected in 1872 by the magistrate of Gyeongju, Yi Man-un (1815-1886).
