고인돌/지석묘 dolmen

  • A dolmen is a type of megalithic tomb constructed during the Bronze Age (1500-300 BC). Dolmens are found all over the world, but 40,000 to 45,000 of them - nearly 40% of the world's total - are located on the Korean Peninsula.
    • 지석묘는 청동기 시대의 대표적인 거석무덤이다. 지석묘는 전 세계에서 발견되고 있으며, 세계 고인돌의 40%에 달하는 4만~4만 5천기의 고인돌이 한반도에서 발견되었다.

서원 Confucian academy

  • Confucian academies, called seowon in Korean, are private education institutions of the Joseon period (1392-1910) which usually combined the functions of a Confucian shrine and a lecture hall.
    • 서원은 조선시대에 설립된 사설교육기관으로, 선현 제향과 교육의 기능을 수행하였다.

향교 Local Confucian school

  • Local Confucian schools, called hyanggyo in Korean, are public education institutions of the Goryeo (918-1392) and Joseon (1392-1910) periods. They were established nationwide to function as local shrines for Confucius and other sages and to promote Confucian education and nurture elites in local districts. Students learned about literature including poetry composition, Confucian Classics, and history.
    • 향교는 고려시대와 조선시대 지방에서 유학을 교육하기 위하여 설립된 국립교육기관이다. 덕행과 학문의 모범을 보인 성현에게 제사를 올리며, 유교의 경전과 역사, 시나 문장을 짓는 법을 가르쳤다.

읍성

  • A walled town, called eupseong in Korean, was established at an important location in an area to protect residents and serve military and administrative functions.
  • 읍성이란 지방 주요 지역에 쌓은 성으로, 지방 주민들을 보호하고 군사, 행정 기능을 담당하던 곳이다.

봉수

  • Beacons were a type of a smoke-and-fire-signal communication system to warn of military events such as enemy invasions. The beacons, which are located atop mountains for visibility, had five furnaces which were lit in a particular pattern to indicate the severity of the situation.
  • 봉수는 횃불과 연기로 적의 침입과 같은 군사정보를 알리던 통신 수단이다. 신호가 잘 보이도록 산봉우리에 설치했고, 정해진 규칙에 따라 다섯 개의 연조에 불을 피워서 상황을 알리는 신호를 전달했다.
  • In the Joseon period (1392-1910), the information was relayed to the central government through a network of beacon stations across the nation. The beacon tower network was comprised of five main lines and other local auxiliary lines. This system was operational until 1894 when the modern communication system was introduced.
  • 조선시대에는 전국의 봉수망을 통해 중앙으로 정보가 전달되었다. 다섯 개의 직봉을 중심으로, 직봉 사이에는 간봉을 두기도 했다. 이러한 제도는 1894년 근대통신수단이 도입될 때까지 사용되었다.

불탑 pagoda

  • A pagoda is a symbolic monument enshrining the relics or remains of the Buddha. In many cases, a pagoda does not contain the actual remains, but is still regarded as a sacred place enshrining the Buddha.
  • 불탑은 부처의 유골을 모신 조형물이다. 실제 유골이 없는 경우가 많지만, 상징적으로 부처를 모신 신성한 곳으로 여겨진다.

승탑 stupa

  • A stupa is a structure containing the relics or remains of an eminent Buddhist monk.
  • 승탑은 스님의 사리나 유골을 모셔 놓은 일종의 무덤이다.
