해설문

국문

'당간 지주'란 ‘당’*을 매다는 기다란 장대인 ‘당간’을 지탱하는 두 돌기둥을 말한다. ‘흥덕 당간 지주’는 고려 초의 사찰인 갈공사의 당간 지주이다. 기단부와 당간 받침은 모두 부서지고, 모서리 끝을 둥글게 처리한 네모난 좌우 대칭의 기둥 두 개만 남아 있다. 기둥 안쪽 상단에는 당간을 고정하는 구멍이 있고, 바깥쪽은 한 면에 3구씩 새긴 연꽃 무늬가 있는데, 이는 다른 당간 지주에서는 찾아볼 수 없는 매우 희귀한 것이다. 1987년에 훼손한 것을 복원하였는데, 오른쪽 기둥은 가로세로로 잘려 나간 흔적이 뚜렷하다.

고려 시대에는 국교(國敎)라고 할 정도로 불교가 발전했지만, 조선은 유학을 나라의 근본으로 삼아 불교를 배척하였다. 흥덕의 ‘갈공사’도 그런 이유로 폐사시키고, 절이 있던 자리에 흥덕 향교*를 세운 것으로 보인다.

영문 해설 내용

당간지주는 당간을 지탱하기 위해 세우는 한 쌍의 돌기둥을 말한다. 당(幢)을 매달아 사찰의 영역을 표시하거나 중요한 행사나 법회가 있을 때 알리기 위해 사용했다.

흥덕향교 앞에 서 있는 이 당간지주는 원래 고려시대의 사찰인 갈공사에 속해있던 것이다. 조선시대에 들어서면서 사찰은 폐사되었고, 그 자리에 흥덕향교를 세운 것으로 보인다.

당간지주는 훼손되어 있었던 것을 1987년에 보수하여 다시 세웠다. 기단과 받침은 모두 부서졌고 2개의 돌기둥만 남아있는데, 오른쪽 기둥은 여러 조각으로 깨졌던 흔적이 뚜렷하게 남아있다. 기둥 안쪽 상단에는 깃대를 고정하는 구멍이 있다. 두 기둥 바깥쪽에 연꽃 장식이 3개씩 새겨져 있는데, 이는 다른 당간지주에서는 찾아볼 수 없는 매우 희귀한 것이다.
