Hwasanseowon Confucian Academy

Confucian academies, called seowon in Korean, are private education institutions of the Joseon period (1392-1910) which usually combined the functions of a Confucian shrine and a lecture hall.

Hwasanseowon is dedicated to Yi Hang-bok (1556-1618, pen name: Baeksa), a civil official and scholar of the mid-Joseon period.

Yi Hang-bok passed the state examination in 1580 and served various official posts. When the Japanese invaded in 1592, he escorted the king to the refuge to the northern border of the peninsula and later greatly contributed to fighting back the Japanese and stabilizing the country in the middle of a crisis. In recognition of his contributions, he was bestowed the title of meritorious subject in 1604.

Hwasanseowon was first built in 1631 in another village in Gasan-myeon. It was initially named “Baeksaseowon” after Yi’s pen name. In 1635, it was moved to the current location, and in 1720, it was renamed by the king to "Hwasanseowon" after Hwabongsan Mountain, at the foot of which it is located. In 1868, it was demolished by a nationwide decree. The shrine was rebuilt in 1971.

The complex, from front to back, includes a main gate, two lecture halls, an inner gate, and a shrine. The lecture halls are also used as ritual houses.
