Hyeonsangoseong Mountain Fortress

Hyeonsangoseong Mountain Fortress is believed to have been built during the Goryeo period (918-1392). The fortress, which is 1.38 km in circumference, surrounds the summit area of Byeongpungsan Mountain at an altitude of 285 m.

The name "Hyeonsangoseong (縣山古城)" simply means "Old Fortress of Hyeonsan," referring to the name of township, Hyeonsan-myeon, where the fortress is located.

Hyeonsangoseong is briefly referred to in the Joseon-period Korean geography book Geography of the Eastern State (Dongguk yeojiji) published by Yu Hyeong-won in 1656. However little is known about the history of this fortress prior to Yun Seon-do's founding of Geumswedong within its premises.

The northwestern section of the fortress wall was built with earth, while the remaining sections and the three gates in the west, south and north were built with stone.
