This stone lantern is presumed to been made during the Unified Silla period (668-935) in the second half of the 8th century. The '''History of the Three Kingdoms''' (Samguk sagi) suggests that a temple called Baekeomsa or Daedongsa was once located in Baekeom-ri Village. The lantern was found collapsed at a nearby field, reassembled, and placed at the current location. Its original location remains unknown.

The lantern consists of a rectangular platform, a round base engraved with lotus designs, a tall octagonal pillar, a light chamber with four openings, and a roof stone. The holes around the openings indicate that doors/ shutters would have been attached there. Also, between the four openings on the light chamber, depictions of the Four Guardian Kings are engraved. It is said that the Four Guardian Kings, who once were the deities of ancient India, eventually turned to Sakyamuni Buddha and became the guardians of his teachings.
