Ancient Tombs in Marisan Mountain, Haman

These tombs are presumed to have been built between the 1st and 6th centuries for the rulers of Ara Gaya, one of the members of the Gaya confederacy (42-562). Ara Gaya was a powerful polity located in the southern area of the Gaya confederacy, which is today’s Haman area, until it was annexed by the Silla kingdom (57 BCE-935 CE) around 560.

Since the 1910s, a number of excavations and surveys have been conducted, revealing that there are approximately 1,000 tombs scattered around this area. Among them, about 150 of the tombs have been excavated and about 8,000 artifacts have been discovered.

One of the most distinguishing characteristics of these tombs is that the location of the tombs were decided based on the social status of the deceased. Larger tombs are situated around the main ridges and top of the mountain, while smaller tombs are situated lower down the on mountain slopes. Also, the tombs show the changes of Gaya’s burial system and tomb structure across time, such as wooden coffin tombs from the 1st-2nd centuries, wooden chamber tombs from the 3rd-5th centuries, stone-lined tombs from the late 5th to early 6th centuries, and stone chamber tombs from the mid-6th century. From the 5th century, the burial of human sacrifices with the deceased began to be practiced, and this demonstrated the authority of the Ara Gaya kings.

Various burial goods found inside the tombs show Ara Gaya’s cultural features and exchange with neighboring kingdoms. Earthenware with openwork frame design and thin metal tools with bird-shaped decorations, which date to the 4th-5th centuries, are unique artifacts found only in the Ara Gaya region. Other excavated artifacts include armor from Japan, and horse harnesses and large swords from Dae Gaya and Silla.
