This is a statue of Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva, or the Bodhisattva of Great Vows, who took on the responsibility of rescuing unfortunate beings from hell and vowed to postpone Buddhahood until all beings are saved from the world of suffering. It is presumed to have been made in the late period of the Joseon dynasty (1392-1910).

해설문

국문

평택 약사사 대웅전에 모셔져 있는 석조지장보살좌상이다. 조선 후기에 조성된 것으로 보이지만 정확한 제작연대는 알 수 없다. 조선 후기에 유행한 나한상의 전형적 특징을 갖춘 보살상으로, 높이 31cm, 무릎 폭 20cm에 불과한 작은 크기이다. 전체적으로 하얀 호분이 두텁게 입혀져 있고, 부분적으로 채색되어 있다.

지장보살은 석장과 보주를 지니는 것이 일반적이지만, 이 지장보살상은 연꽃을 들고 있다. 두 손은 손가락을 약간 구부린 상태에서 손바닥을 위로 향하게 한 채 양쪽 무릎에 올려놓았는데, 오른쪽 손바닥 위에는 빨간 연꽃송이가 하나 놓여 있다.

약사사 석조지장보살좌상과 같이 두건을 쓴 나한 모습의 지장상은 조선시대 말기에 경상북도 일부 지역에서 확인되고 있어서 이 존상 역시 발원문에 기록된 바와 같이 지장보살상일 것으로 추정된다. 약사사에 봉안하기 위하여 조성한 것이 분명하고, 시대성을 충분히 반영하고 있다

국문 수정안

이 보살상은 지장보살을 나타낸 것으로, 조선 후기에 만들어진 것으로 보인다. 지장보살은 지옥에서 고통받는 중생을 구원하며, 모든 중생을 구원할 때까지 성불을 미루는 보살이다.

지장보살상은 두 손에 지팡이와 구슬을 들고 있는 것이 일반적이지만, 이 보살상은 연꽃을 들고 있는 것이 특징적이다. 머리에 쓴 두건은 팔 윗부분까지 덮고 있다. 몸 전체에는 흰색 안료가 칠해져 있다.
