The local Confucian schools were established by the government during Joseon period (1392-1910). The schools served as secondary educational institutions at county level to promote the Confucian education and nurturing elites in local districts. Students learned about literature including composing poetry, Confucian Classics, and history. After a nationwide reform in 1894, it had lost its educational function and has only performed rituals for Confucius in spring and autumn.

Pyeongtaekhyanggyo is presumed to have been built in the early period of Joseon dynasty. It is located southeast to the hill behind the village in Gaeksa-ri about 500 meters away from Paengseong-eup, the seat of local government office. Its buildings underwent multiple repairs after destruction during the Manchu invasions in 1636-1637. During the Japanese colonial period (1910-1945), its main gate was once removed by the Japanese to use this school as an agricultural school. The gate was rebuilt in the late 1970s.

The rituals for Confucius and Confucian sages are held in spring and autumn, and incense-burning rituals in the first and the fifteenth days of every month with local Confucius followers from nearby towns.
