해설문

국문

팔미도등대는 1903년에 세워진 우리나라 최초의 등대이다. 서남해(西南海)에서 인천으로 들어오는 길목에 위치하여 지정학적으로 해상교통 안내의 중요 기능을 담당하였으며, 항로 표지의 효시(嚆矢)라는 역사적 의의를 갖는다. 1883년 인천항이 개항되어 선박 운항이 빈번해지자 등대의 필요성이 대두되었다. 이에 1902년 5월에 공사를 시작하였으며 이듬해 6월에 완공되어 불을 밝혔다. 1950년 9월 인천상륙작전 때에도 활용된 이 등대는, 목조 중심의 전통 건축 방식에서 돌, 콘크리트 등의 다양한 재료를 사용하고, 등명기 렌즈를 활용하는 등 근대 공학 기술을 적용하였다.
