Han Yong-un’s Simujang House

This is the house where Han Yong-un (1879-1944, pen name: Manhae), a Buddhist monk, poet, and independence activist, lived from 1933 until his death.

Born in Hongseong in Chungcheongnam-do Province, Han became a monk in 1905 at Baekdamsa Temple in Seoraksan Mountain. He tried to popularize Buddhism by translating Buddhist texts into vernacular Korean and led a reform movement for Korean Buddhism. He was one of the 33 national representatives who announced the Declaration of Independence of 1919 during the Japanese colonial period (1910-1945) and wrote a part of the declaration. His poetry expresses Buddhist thoughts and his strong will for national independence.

This house was built in 1933 as a place for Han to spend his later years. It was intentionally built facing north, which is uncommon, so that it did not face the direction of the Japanese Government-General's Building (at today's Gwanghwamun Gate).

The house consists of a wooden-floored hall at the center, an underfloor-heated room on the left, and a kitchen on the right. The wooden plaque in front of the room bears the name of this house, Simujang. "Simu" in the name means “searching for the lost ox.” This phrase comes from a Buddhist tale that compares searching for an ox to a spiritual journey in search of enlightenment.
