Bukgeukjeon Hall at Anyangam Hermitage of Tongdosa Temple

Anyangam Hermitage is a small Buddhist temple affiliated with Tongdosa Temple. It is unknown when the hermitage was first built, but (according to what?) in 1295 and 1865, it underwent reconstructions overseen by Monk Chanin and Monk Yangdam, respectively.

Built in the late period of the Joseon dynasty (1392-1910), Bukgeukjeon Hall is the main hall of Anyangam Hermitage. It is a shrine for Chilseong, the divinities of the Seven Stars (of the Big Dipper), who are believed to control longevity. In Korea, the Big Dipper has been worshipped and attributed divine qualities from the early times. Thus, enshrining Chilseong at a Buddhist temple, a practice unique to Korea, demonstrates the harmonious symbiosis of Korean Buddhism and indigenous beliefs.

Although this building is quite small, its interior and exterior are elaborated painted and adorned with decorative carvings, suggesting the extreme dedication of the common people to worshiping Chilseong.

The sunrise seen from Anyangam Hermitage is one of the eight scenic sites of Tongdosa Temple.
