국문

고려 말에 활동한 대지국사(大智國師, 1328∼1390)의 생애를 담은 비이다. 비는 매우 간단한 형태로 4각형의 비좌(碑座)에 귀접이를 한 비석을 끼웠는데 이러한 양식은 고려말 조선초에 유행했다.

대지국사는 양주한씨(楊州韓氏)로 법명은 찬영(粲英), 자(字)는 고저(古樗), 호(號)는 목암(木菴)이다. 1341년(충혜왕 2) 출가하여 태고화상(太古和尙) 보우(普愚)를 은사로 계(戒)를 받았으며 1353년(공민왕 2) 승과에 장원급제 하였다. 이후 석남사, 운문사 등 여러 사찰의 주지를 맡았으며 1383년(우왕 9) 왕사(王師)가 되어 원응존자(圓應尊者)라는 칭호를 받았다. 이후 억정사 주지를 지내다 1390년(공양왕 2) 6월 63세로 입적하였다.

고려 공양왕 때 내린 시호는 지감국사(智鑑國師), 탑호(塔號)는 혜월원명(慧月圓明)이었다. 그런데 고려에서 조선으로 왕조가 바뀌면서 조선 태조(이성계)가 시호는 대지국사(大智國師)로, 탑호는 지감원명(智鑑圓明)으로 바꿨다.

이 비는 1393년(태조 2)에 대선사(大禪師) 중윤(中允)이 세웠으며 박의중(朴宜中)이 비문을 짓고, 선진(旋軫)이 글을 쓰고 혜공(惠公)이 글자를 새겼다.


* 대지국사를 화장한 후 유골을 봉안한 승탑(僧塔)은 언제, 어디로 사라졌는지 알 수 없다. 다만 충주박물관(중앙탑면 탑평리) 앞에 전시한 신만리 부도재가 대지국사와 관련된 승탑일 가능성이 있다.
