Sakyamuni Stupa of Ansimsa Temple, Cheongju

This bell-shaped stupa is believed to contain remains of the Buddha, Sakyamuni. According to a local legend, the remains of the Buddha were enshrined in Ansimsa Temple in 775, when Buddhist monk Jinpyo founded the temple during the Silla period (57 BCE – 935 CE). The inscription on the stele next to the stupa, however, indicates that the original stupa was lost for a long time before it was found in Guryongsan Mountain in the late period of the Joseon dynasty (1392-1910). It was moved to the present site in 1900, and its sculptural style suggests that the stupa was reconstructed during the relocation process. The stupa sits on an octagonal base, and its top part is decorated with 28 pearl- shaped relief sculptures. Its height is 2 m.
