해설문

국문

천황사는 신라 헌강왕 1년(875) 무염(無染) 선사가 세우고, 고려 문종 18년(1064)에 대각국사 의천(義天)이 고쳐 지었다. 원래 주천면 운봉리에 있었던 것을 조선 숙종 때 다시 고쳐 지으면서 현재 자리로 옮겼다고 한다.

천황사의 중앙 뒤편에 있는 대웅전은 정면 3칸, 측면 3칸의 맞배지붕 건물이다. 기둥머리와 지붕 사이의 공포*는 양 끝에 섬세한 장식이 가미된 내외삼출목(內外三出目)의 다포 양식이다. 천황사 대웅전처럼 맞배지붕의 건물을 다포 양식으로 꾸민 것은 보기 드문 예이다. 정면에는 ‘정(井)’ 자 문살로 짠 문짝과 빗살로 짠 문짝을 교대로 달았다.

대웅전 내부에는 석가모니 삼존불이 모셔져 있고, 불상 위쪽으로 닫집*이 설치되어 있다. 천장은 우물 정(井) 자 모양으로 짜고 그 사이에 연꽃 모양 널빤지를 덮어 만든 우물천장이다. 벽면 위쪽으로는 선녀들이 악기를 연주하고 춤을 추는 비천상(飛天像)이 그려져 있다.
