해설문

국문

천정대는 백제시대 재상을 뽑았던 곳으로 전해지는 곳이다. 호암리 동북쪽 백마강가에 위치한 취령봉 꼭대기의 범바위라 부르는 넓적한 암반으로, 근처 절벽 아래에는 임금바위, 신하바위라 부르는 바위가 있다.

조선시대 기록에는 천정대를 백제시대의 정사암이라고 하였다. 『삼국유사』에 따르면, 정사암은 호암사에 있는데, 나라에서 재상을 뽑을 때 후보들의 이름을 적어 상자에 넣어 정사암 위에 놓아두었다가 며칠 후 열어보아 이름 위에 도장이 찍힌 사람을 재상으로 삼았다고 한다.

천정대는 전해 내려오는 이야기와 함께 나라의 중요한 일을 결정하는데 하늘의 뜻을 따르고자 했던 백제 정치사상의 모습을 보여주는 점에서 중요하다.

영문

Cheonjeongdae

This site is said to be the place where the minister of the state of the kingdom was selected. In the area there is a flat-surfaced boulder called beombawi (“tiger rock”), as well as sinhabawi (“vassal’s rock”) and imgeumbawi (“king’s rock”) nearby.

According to the Samguk yusa (Memorabilia of the Three Kingdoms), when the minister of the state was selected, the candidates would write down their names and place them in a chest on the top of the rock. After a couple of days, the chest would be opened and the person whose name had a seal on it would be considered acting minister of the state.

According to another legend, this was where memorial rites to the heavens, observed both by the ruler and the vassals. The readiness to obey the will of heaven conveyed in that legend provides an important insight into the remnants of tribal society in Baekje.

The phrase cheonjeong (天政) in the name means “the politics of heaven.”

영문 해설 내용

백제시대 재상을 뽑았던 곳으로 전해지는 곳이다. 범바위라는 넓적한 암반 주변에 임금바위, 신하바위라 부르는 바위가 있다.

『삼국유사』에 따르면, 나라에서 재상을 뽑을 때 후보들의 이름을 적어 상자에 넣어 바위 위에 놓아두었다가 며칠 후 열어보아 이름 위에 도장이 찍힌 사람을 재상으로 삼았다고 한다.

또 이곳에서 임금과 신하가 각기 하늘에 제사를 올리고 기원했다는 전설이 전한다. 하늘의 뜻을 따르고자 했던 부족사회의 모습이 백제시대에도 남아있음을 보여주는 점에서 중요하다.

‘천정(天政)’은 ‘하늘의 정치’라는 뜻이다.
