해설문

국문

괘불은 법당 밖에서 의식을 행할 때 그곳에 내거는 불화를 말한다. 천은사 괘불은 1673년에 경심, 지감, 능성 등의 화원이 그린 영산회상도로 한 폭의 화면에 권속을 대동하지 않고 석가모니불을 단독으로 등장시켰으며, 형태, 향토색이 강한 독특한 채색, 필선, 문양 등에서 17세기 후반의 새로운 경향을 보여준다.

폭 36㎝의 삼베 15조각을 이어 붙여 높이 8.94m, 폭 5.67m의 거대한 화면에 장대하게 그렸다. 화면의 중앙에 석가모니 부처가 두 발을 벌리고 오른손은 아래로 늘어뜨리고 왼손은 배에 대고 손바닥을 위로 향한 채 당당하게 서 있는 자세를 취하고 있다.

괘불의 하단에 기록된 내용을 보면 “이 공덕이 널리 보급되어 우리들과 중생이 모두 함께 불도를 이루기를 원합니다. 주상전하께서 만년동안 사시고 왕비전하께서도 그 만큼 오래 사시고 세자저하께서 천년동안 사시며, 나라가 태평스럽고 백성이 편안하며 불법이 항상 끝없이 널리 퍼지며, 전쟁이 영원히 사라져 국토가 평화롭고 어지럽지 않으며, 법계의 중생이 함께 피안에 오르기를 엎드려 원합니다.” 라고 적고 있어 이 괘불을 조성하여 봉안함으로써 왕실의 평안은 물론 불교의 법으로 백성들이 항상 편안하기를 기원하고 함께 피안의 세계에 이르기를 간절히 바라면서 이 괘불을 조성하였음을 알 수 있다.
