해설문

국문

천성사명 금동보살입상은 만일사 관음전에 모셔져 있는 불상이다. 불상의 높이는 127cm이고, 대좌의 높이는 34cm이다. 대좌에 ‘통화 20년 천성사(統和二十年天聖寺)’라는 글이 새겨져 있는데 이에 근거하여 1002년(목종 5) 고려 시대에 만들어진 것으로 추정된다. 일제강점기에 땅속에 묻혀 있던 것을 발견했는데, 2차 세계대전 중에 전쟁 물자로 사용하기 위해 공출되었던 것을 다시 거두어 만일사에 모시게 된 것으로 알려져 있다.

보살상은 머리에 보관을 썼는데, 보관 가운데에는 작은 불상이 조각되어 있고 오른손에는 정병(淨甁)*을 들고 있어 관음보살임을 알 수 있다. 왼손에는 작고 둥근 구슬인 보주를 쥐고 있다. 가슴에는 가는 목걸이가 늘어져 있고, 가슴 아래로 늘어진 옷자락은 발까지 부드럽게 흘러내린다.

관음보살은 부처님의 자비를 상징하는 대표적인 보살로서 사람들이 어려움을 겪을 때 그 이름을 외우기만 하면 여러 가지 모습으로 나타나 도움을 주는 것으로 알려져 있다.

Gilt-bronze Standing Bodhisattva with Inscription of “Cheonseongsa” in Seonggeosan Mountain, Cheonan

This statue depicts Avalokitesvara, the Bodhisattva of Great Compassion. Based on the inscription on its pedestal, which reads “the 20th Tonghwa Year, Cheonseongsa Temple,” the statue is presumed to have been made in 1002 during the Goryeo period (918-1392) to be enshrined in Cheonseongsa Temple. However, the statue was lost at some later point and was discovered buried underground during the Japanese colonial period (1910-1945). The Japanese once took this statue to melt it down for war supplies, but the head monk of Manilsa Temple recovered it.

Avalokitesvara wears a splendid jeweled headdress with a small depiction of the Buddha carved in the middle, and his chest is covered with beaded jewelry. The halo, which represents an auspicious light radiating from his body, is expressed in the shape of a flame around the head. He holds a bottle of pure water (kundika) in the right hand and a wish-fulfilling jewel in the left hand. The statue and the pedestal measure 127 cm and 34 cm in height, respectively.

영문 해설 내용

이 불상은 관음보살을 나타낸 것이다. 대좌에 ‘통화 20년 천성사’라는 글이 새겨져 있는데, 이에 따르면 이 불상은 고려시대인 1002년 천성사에 봉안하기 위해 만들어진 것으로 추정된다. 이후 이 불상은 분실되었다가 일제강점기 때 땅속에 묻혀 있는 채로 발견되었다. 일제가 전쟁물자로 사용하기 위해 가져갔던 것을 만일사 주지가 되찾아왔다.

관음보살은 작은 화불이 새겨진 화려한 보관을 쓰고 있으며, 가슴은 구슬 장식으로 덮여 있다. 몸에서 나오는 성스러운 빛을 나타내는 광배는 머리 주위에 불꽃 모양으로 표현되었다. 오른손과 왼손에는 각각 정병과 여의주를 들고 있다. 불상의 높이는 127cm이고, 대좌의 높이는 34cm이다.
