국문

창원 정법사 목조관음보살좌상은 높이 66.5cm, 무릎 폭 40cm의 중형 불상으로 마산포교당으로 건립될 당시 옮겨온 불상이다.

보살상은 통통한 얼굴에 자비로운 미소를 머금고 있다. 신체 비례는 적당하고 수인*은 아미타구품인**을 하고 있으며, 중생을 내려다보는 형태로 현실적 조형미가 뛰어나다.

보살상 내부에서 발견된 주서 다라니***가 17세기 중·후반에 인쇄된 사실과 윗옷 옷자락을 표현한 방식 등을 통해 17세기 중반에 만들어진 것으로 추정된다.

정법사 목조관음보살좌상은 보존 상태가 양호하고, 제작 시기가 뚜렷해 조선 후기 불상 조각사 연구에 중요한 가치를 지닌다.
