TThis temple is known to have been founded by the monk Muyeom (801-888) in 835 during the Unified Silla period (668-935).

According to a legend, when the Silla kingdom was suffering from constant raids by Japanese pirates, a deity appeared in the dream of King Heungdeok (r. 826-836), who told him to look for monk Muyeom from Jirisan Mountain and ask him for help. When Muyeom received the king’s message, he used his supernatural power to fight off the pirates. Pleased with this news, King Heungdeok provided the land and manpower to build this temple, which he named Seongjusa. The name means “the temple where a holy man resides,” with the "holy man" being a reference to Muyeom.

Seongjusa Temple is also known as Ungsinsa or Gomjeol, meaning "temple of the bear spirits," which comes from another legend. After the temple was destroyed during the Japanese invasions of 1592-1598, the temple needed to be rebuilt, so lumber was collected and prepared at the site of the destroyed temple. But in the middle of the night, the local bears moved all the lumber to another nearby location, and so, it was decided to rebuild the temple at this new location.

*I’ve noticed that “전해진다” is often used when there is actually a specific record in a historical document about it. And if that’s the case (I feel like it is) I’m not sure if translating it as “it is said” would be precise enough…? - Andri
