해설문
국문
달천구천은 조선 시대의 문신이자 학자인 허목(許穆, 1595~1682)이 손수 만들었다고 전해지는 우물이다.
허목은 생전에 벼슬을 그만두고 몇 년간 창원에 머무른 적이 있었는데 그때 달천 계곡에 달천정이라는 정자를 짓고 지냈다고 한다. 이때 이곳에 손수 우물을 파고 거북 모양의 돌을 깎아 넣은 후 ‘거북샘’이라는 뜻의 ‘구천(龜泉)’이라는 이름을 지었다.
이 우물은 가뭄이 들어도 마르지 않으며 얼음장처럼 차갑고 맑은 물이 솟아 나온다고 한다.
우물가에는 수백 년 된 매화나무가 한 그루 있는데 이 나무 역시 허목이 심은 것이라고 전해진다.
