해설문
국문
남근석은 남성 생식기 모양의 돌로, 민족 고유 신앙인 남근숭배의 신앙물이다. 자손이 귀하거나 아기를 낳지 못하는 여성들이 남근석에 정성을 다해 소원을 빌면 아기를 가질 수 있다는 믿음 때문에 만들어진 것이 대부분이다.
전설에 따르면 창덕리 남근석은 500여 년 전 태촌마을에 살던 한 걸인이 결혼을 할 수 없음을 비관하여 설움을 달래고자 세웠다고 하며, 과부로 지내던 한 여인이 산동리 남근석과 함께 세웠다고도 한다.
화강암으로 정교하고도 대담하게 조각한 이 남근석은 아랫부분에 연꽃무늬를 새긴 점이 특이하다. 매년 정월 대보름이 되면 아기를 갖기 원하는 많은 여인들이 이곳에 와서 기도하였다고 한다.
영문
Phallic Stone in Changdeok-ri
A phallic stone is an object of folk worship. It is either a natural stone that resembles a phallus or an artificial sculpture made in the shape of a phallus. Most of phallic stones were made as a result of a common belief that if a woman who has trouble conceiving sincerely wishes upon such statue, she will be granted a child.
According to a legend, Phallic Stone in Changdeok-ri was erected* some 500 years ago by one widow. It is said that she was trying to move two stones, but since they were too heavy, she put one up here, and one in Sandong-ri, 1.5 km to the north from this spot. According to another legend, this phallic stone was made to appease the sorrow of one beggar ‘’’girl’’’ from the neighboring village, who couldn’t marry.*
This phallic stone was elaborately and boldly sculptured from granite and it is quite particular as it features a lotus flower pattern engraved at the bottom. It is said that on the first full moon in the first lunar month of each year, many women would come here to pray for child.

남근석은 남자의 성기 모양을 조각하여 세우거나 비슷한 형태의 자연 암석을 대상으로 하는 신앙물이다. 아기를 낳지 못하는 여성들이 남근석에 정성을 다해 소원을 빌면 아기를 가질 수 있다는 믿음 때문에 만들어진 것이 대부분이다.
전설에 따르면 창덕리 남근석은 500여 년 전에 한 과부가 세웠다고 한다. 과부는 두 개의 남근석을 옮기다가 너무 무거워서, 하나는 이곳에 세우고 하나는 북쪽으로 약 1.5km 떨어진 산동리에 세웠다고 한다. 또 다른 전설에 따르면 인근 마을에 살던 한 걸인이 결혼을 할 수 없음을 비관하여 설움을 달래고자 세웠다고도 한다.
