Yi Jang-gon, born in Changnyeong, passed the state examination in 1502 and became a government official, but soon he was involved into a political strife and sent exile to Geoje Island in 1504. He returned to the government in 1506 when King Jungjong (r. 1506-1544) ascended the throne and gained trust of the king. Thus he served various high official posts but again, in 1519, got involved in a political strife that dismissed him from his positions.
