Shell mounds are composed of clam, oyster, and other shellfish shells and waste disposed of by prehistoric people. Sometimes, dwelling sites and artifacts including earthenware and stone tools are found near shell mounds. 해설문

국문

창녕 비봉리 패총은 선사시대에 인류가 버린 조개껍데기와 생활 쓰레기가 쌓여 만들어진 유적이다. 마치 무덤처럼 보여 조개 무덤 또는 조개무지라고 한다.

비봉리 패총은 내륙 지방에서 처음 발견된 신석기시대 유적으로 기원전 7,700년 무렵부터 청동기시대까지 오랜 기간에 걸쳐 만들어졌다. 현재 이 패총은 신석기시대의 표준 연대 자료로 활용되고 있다.

비봉리 패총에서는 빗살무늬토기와 함께 우리나라에서 가장 오래된 나무 배, 편물* 기술을 보여주는 망태기, 동물 배설물이 화석처럼 굳은 분석(糞石), 대규모 도토리 저장시설 등이 확인되어 당시의 식생과 생활상을 연구하는 데 중요한 자료로 평가된다. 또한 저습지에서 발견된 동식물 자료를 보면 신석기시대에는 낙동강 중류까지 바닷물이 들어왔음을 알 수 있다.

비봉리 패총은 배수장을 건립하는 과정에서 발견되어 현재 창녕 비봉리 패총 전시관에 전시ㆍ보존되고 있다.
