This tracksite includes a large number of tracks of several species that lived about 100 million years ago during the Cretaceous period, which includes over 2,500 tracks of birds, such as plovers (from the Charadriidae family*), more than 80 tracks of dinosaurs, and more than 100 tracks of pterosaurs. It is quite rare for the tracks of birds and dinosaurs to be seen at the same site.

Originally covered by a swamp, the site was discovered in 1997 about 35 m under the surface during the construction of Gyeongsangnam-do Institute of Science Education**. The excavation was conducted immediately, and the next year, the site was designated as a natural monument. The building of the institute was eventually redesigned to incorporate in its exhibition hall the tracksite and the sedimentary structure around it in their natural form.

This tracksite is also a good example of the geological and ecological environment of the Cretaceous period. The surface of the rock features cracks and wave-shaped sedimentary structures which suggests that it was formed in a floodplain environment, characterized by repeated alternations of droughts and wet seasons. The site also demonstrates traces of the birds pecking the soil with their beaks in search of food, which provides a glance into their habitual behavior.

(Gyeongsangnam-do Institute of Science Education)
