해설문

국문

전나무(Abies hollophylla)는 소나뭇과의 상록침엽교목으로, 1,500m 이하의 높은 지역에 주로 서식하며 음지에서도 잘 자란다. 나무 높이는 30~40m 정도 자라는데, 어릴 때는 제멋대로 자라나 클수록 매우 곧아지며 잔가지가 사방으로 빙 둘러 나서 위쪽이 뾰족한 원추형 또는 둥근 삼각형이 된다.

천황사 전나무는 줄기의 위쪽 끝부분이 다소 구부러졌으나 모양이 아름답고 수세(樹勢)도 좋은 편이다. 나무 높이는 35.0m에 이르며, 가슴높이의 둘레가 5.7m, 폭은 동서방향 16.6m, 남북방향 16.0m에 이른다. 수령은 410년 정도로 추정되는데, 일찍이 천황사 산중턱 남암(南庵) 앞에 심어 사찰의 번성을 기원한 것으로 전해진다.

천황사 전나무는 현재까지 알려진 우리나라 전나무 중 가장 크고 나무의 모양과 수세가 매우 양호한 편이어서 학술적 가치가 높다.

영문

Needle fir (Abies holophylla) is an evergreen coniferous tree in the family Pinaceae. Normally, it grows in mountainous regions, lower than 1,500 m above sea level, as well as shady places. Its shoot becomes very straight as it grows, and at maturity, the tree grows to 30-40 m tall with a conical crown of spreading branches.

The needle fir of Cheonhwangsa Temple is in good condition with a beautiful shape, although its top part is slightly bent. This specimen is the largest among this species found in Korea; It is 35 m in height, 5.7 m in circumference at chest level, 16.6 m in width from east to west, and 16 m in width from north to south. It is presumed to have been planted in front of Namam Hermitage in Cheonhwangsa Temple about 410 years ago as a prayer for the prosperity of the temple.
