마이산은 두 개의 산봉우리로 이루어져 있는데, 각각 암마이봉(686m)과 숫마이봉(680m)으로 불린다. 마이산이라는 이름은 조선 태종 때 두 산봉우리가 말의 귀 모양을 하고 있다고 하여 붙여진 것으로, 신라 때는 서다산(西多山), 고려 때는 용출산(湧出山), 조선 초기에는 속금산(束金山)이라 불렀다.

또한 두 산봉우리의 모습에 따라 봄에는 배의 돛대와 같다고 하여 돛대봉, 여름에는 용의 뿔처럼 보인다 하여 용각봉(龍角峰), 가을에는 마이봉(馬耳峰) 그리고 겨울에는 붓끝처럼 보인다 해서 문필봉(文筆峰)으로 부르기도 하였다.

마이산의 지질 구성은 백악기의 역암(礫岩: 퇴적암의 하나)으로, 특히 암마이봉 남쪽에는 다양한 크기의 구멍이 많이 나 있다. 이를 풍화혈(風化穴: 풍화 작용으로 인하여 바위 표면에 움푹 팬 구멍)의 일종인 타포니라 하는데, 암석의 작은 홈에 물이 들어가서 얼었다 녹았다를 반복하며 구멍이 넓게 만들어진 것이다. 마이산은 전형적인 타포니 현상을 관찰할 수 있는 세계적 지질 명소이기도 하다.

마이산에는 줄사철나무 군락(천연기념물 제380호)과 태조 이성계가 심었다고 전해지는 은수사 청실배나무(천연기념물 제386호) 등 다양한 식물상과 마이산탑전라북도 기념물 제35호 등 많은 문화유산이 조화롭게 어우러져 있다.

마이산은 진안 지역의 가장 대표적인 산이다.

약 7천만 년 전 백악기의 지질변동으로 융기되어 형성된 산으로, 서봉인 암마이봉(686m)과 동봉인 수마이봉(680m)으로 이루어져 있다. 지질 구성은 역암으로, 특히 암마이봉에 타포니라는 풍화혈이 많이 나 있다.

이 산은 삼국시대부터 명산으로 여겨져 왔다. 전설에 따르면 조선을 건국한 태조 이성계가 이 산에 들렀다가, 꿈에서 신인(神人)으로부터 새 왕조를 세우라는 계시를 받았다고 한다. 이 때문에 조선에서는 매년 이 산에서 산신제를 모셨다.

‘마이산’이라는 이름은 1413년 조선 태종(재위 1400-1418)이 산신제를 거행하러 왔다가, 두 산봉우리가 말의 귀 모양을 닮았다고 하여 내린 것이라고 한다.
