Local Confucian schools, called hyanggyo in Korean, are public education institutions of the Goryeo (918-1392) and Joseon (1392-1910) periods. They were established nationwide to function as local shrines for Confucius and other sages and to promote Confucian education and nurture elites in local districts. Students learned about literature including poetry composition, Confucian Classics, and history.

Then the  Japanese soldiers invaded Jindohyanggyo, willing to destroy it, but saw the message and were amazed. They left a message saying “There are also loyal figures in this country!" and retreated.

해설문

국문

향교는 고려 시대와 조선 시대에 지방에서 유학을 교육하기 위하여 설립한 국립 교육 기관이다. 덕행과 학문의 모범을 보인 성현에게 제사를 올리며, 유교의 경전과 역사, 시나 문장을 짓는 법을 가르쳤다.

이 향교는 조선 세종 20년(1438)에 창건하였다. 처음에는 읍성 동측에 세웠는데, 그 후 몇 차례 위치를 옮겼으며, 현종 8년(1667) 현재의 위치에 정착하였다. 건물로는 향교 뒤편의 제향 공간에 대성전과 동무, 서무 등의 사당이 있고, 앞쪽의 교육 공간에는 유생들의 교육 장소였던 명륜당과 기숙사인 동재, 서재 등의 건물이 있다.

임진왜란 때에 왜병이 진도에 쳐들어오자, 당시 향교의 전교(典校)였던 김희남이 성현의 위패를 안전한 곳으로 옮기면서 명륜당 기둥에 “세상에 어찌 공자의 도가 없을 수 있겠는가? (天下豈無夫子道)”라고 써 붙여 놓았다. 그 뒤 왜병들이 향교에 침입하여 불을 지르려다 이 글을 보고 경탄하며 그 옆에 “이 나라에도 충성스러운 인물이 있구나! (此地亦有忠烈士)”라고 써 붙인 다음 스스로 후퇴하였다는 이야기가 전한다.

대성전에는 공자를 비롯한 중국과 우리나라의 선현 25분의 위패가 모셔져 있고, 해마다 봄과 가을에 이들을 기리는 제사를 지낸다. 향교 내외에는 역대 전교와 유공 인사의 공적비가 세워져 있다.
