해설문
국문
이 읍성은 관청과 민가를 보호하기 위해 고을 전체를 둘러싼 성이다. 조선 세종 19년(1437) 해진군에서 진도군으로 복군할 때에 지금의 고군면 고성리에 터를 잡았으나, 1440년 진도군의 행정 중심을 현재의 진도읍 위치로 옮기면서 쌓기 시작하여, 1446년경 완공하였을 것으로 추정한다.
성의 형태는 사다리꼴에 가까운 장방형이며, 성벽의 총 길이는 약 1,589m이다. 성문은 동, 서, 남쪽 3곳에 두었다. 방어를 위해 성문 바깥쪽을 반원형으로 둘러막은 옹성을 쌓았고, 측면에서 적을 공격할 수 있도록 성벽을 돌출시킨 치*를 여러 곳에 설치하였다.
진도 읍성은 옹성, 치, 해자**와 장대*** 등 다양한 형태의 방어 시설을 두루 갖춘 조선 초기의 읍성으로, 14~15세기 우리나라 읍성의 형태와 가치를 살펴볼 수 있는 문화재이다. 일제 강점기 이후 도로 건설과 도시 확장으로 성벽의 많은 부분을 훼손하고 일부만이 남아 있다.
