After graduating from school in 1907, Jo participated in the domestic independence movement, keeping in contact with the overseas independence leaders who defected to Kando, such as Yi Dong-nyeong (1869-1940) and Yi Si-yeong (1869-1953). In 1920, he also defected to China and joined the Provisional Government in Shanghai as a committee member. In 1926, Jo was sent to Manchuria as a representative of an association, established Sinchang School to educate young people. In 1931, Jo became the chief of the Korean National Army Liason Unit and devoted himself in uniting the Korean military independence activists. In 1933, he was arrested by the Japanese police in Manchuria and received a life sentence. After a while he was granted a reprieve of five years, and deported to Japan. In 1968, he received a presidential citation for the independence patriots.

국문

민족 독립운동에 헌신한 조영원(趙永元, 1892~1974)의 공로와 정신을 기리기 위하여 1982년에 세운 비이다.

조영원은 유신학교를 졸업한 뒤 국권이 일제에 강탈당하자, 당시 서간도에 망명 중인 이동녕(李東寧, 1869~1940), 이시영(李始榮, 1869~1953) 등과 연락을 취하며 국내에서 독립활동을 하였다. 1920년 중국 상해로 망명하여 상해임시정부 의정원 의원 등을 지냈고, 1921년 의열단에 가입하여 중앙 집행 위원을 역임하였다. 1926년 촉성회 대표로 만주에 파견되어 김좌진(金佐鎭, 1889~1930) 장군이 이끌던 신민부의 군사위원으로 활약하면서 신창학교를 창설하여 인재 양성에 힘썼으며, 1931년 한국독립군 총사령부 총참모로 독립군 규합에 힘썼다. 1933년 만주에서 일본 경찰에 체포되어 사형수로 복역 중 5년간 집행유예로 일본에 압송되었다. 1968년 독립유공자 대통령 표창을 받았다.

비석의 앞면에 ‘독립지사 각산 조영원 선생 공적비(獨立志士覺山趙永元先生功績碑)’라고 새겨져 있다.
