Tomb of Jo Gyeong

This is the tomb of Jo Gyeong (1586-1669, pen name: Yongju), a civil official of the Joseon period (1392-1910), and his wife Lady Kim.

Jo Gyeong passed the preliminary state examination in 1612. However, he shortly thereafter left for Geochang in the countryside due to the violent rule of King Gwanghaegun (r. 1608-1623). In 1626, after King Gwanghaegun was removed from the throne, Jo Gyeong passed the state examination and went on to serve various official posts. In 1655, he was admitted to the esteemed Society of Elderly Officials, which took care of accomplished civil officials who were 70 years and older. His literary works include his collected writings (Yongju yugo) and a record of his travel to Japan as an envoy in 1643 (Dongsarok).

This tomb consists of a tomb mound, tombstone, stone table, stone incense table, and a newly added stone lantern and stone pillars. Nearby is a shrine which holds the spirit tablets of Jo and his wife, as well as the portrait of Jo painted when he was initiated to the Society of Elderly Officials.
