능강리 고인돌은 발굴 당시 제천시 수산면 능강리 530-13번지 일원에 위치하였으며, 1호 고인돌은 기반식(碁盤式) 고인돌로 덮개돌의 크기는 350×200~220×62~66cm이며 무게는 약 14.7t이다. 발굴 과정에서 무덤방의 바닥돌로 추정되는 유구와 화살촉·갈돌·민무늬토기 편 등의 유물이 발견됐다. 남한강유역에서 처음 발굴조사된 기반식 고인돌이다. 2호 고인돌은 개석식(蓋石式) 고인돌로 1호 고인돌에서 북동방향으로 약 154m 떨어진 곳에 위치하였으며, 덮개돌의 크기는 232~160×230×46~76cm이며 무게는 약 8.6t이다. 발견된 유구나 유물은 없었다.

2000년 9월 발굴조사 완료 후 고인돌 2기를 청풍문화재단지 후문으로 옮겨 복원하였다. 그리고 2020년 11월 현 위치로 이전하였다.

능강리 고인돌은 남한강 상류지역의 청동기 문화를 살펴 볼 수 있는 의미를 지니고 있다,

A dolmen is a megalithic monument constructed during the Bronze Age (1500-300 BCE). Dolmens are found in parts of Europe, Africa, and Asia. The Korean Peninsula has the largest concentration of dolmens in the world.

The two dolmens located in Uirimji History Museum were originally found in Neunggang-ri in 1998 and were excavated in 2000. After the excavation, the dolmens were reassembled at the Cheongpung Cultural Heritage Complex and were moved again to the current location in 2020.

영문 해설 내용

고인돌은 청동기 시대의 대표적인 거석 구조물이다. 고인돌은 유럽, 아프리카, 아시아 등에 분포하고 있는데, 한반도는 세계에서 가장 집중적으로 분포된 지역이다.

의림지 역사박물관에 있는 2기의 고인돌은 1998년 능강리에서 발견되었으며, 2000년 발굴조사를 완료한 후 청풍문화재단지로 옮겼다가, 2020년 지금의 위치로 옮겼다.

1호 고인돌은 땅속에 돌방을 만들고 작은 받침돌을 놓은 뒤 그 위에 덮개돌을 올린 바둑판식 고인돌이다. 덮개돌의 크기는 가로 3.5m, 세로 2-2.2m, 두께 62-66cm 이며, 무게는 약 14.7t이다. 발굴 과정에서 돌방의 바닥돌로 추정되는 석재, 화살촉, 갈돌, 민무늬토기 조각 등이 발견되었다. 2호 고인돌은 지하의 무덤방 위에 바로 덮개돌을 놓는 개석식 고인돌이다. 덮개돌의 크기는 가로 2.3-1.6m, 세로 2.3m, 두께 46-76cm이며, 무게는 약 8.6t이다. 발견된 유구나 유물은 없었다.
