정읍 화호리 구 일본인 농장가옥은 정읍과 김제 일대에 대규모 토지를 차지한 일본인 농장주 구마모토 리헤이(熊本利平)가 소유했던 주택이다. 주택의 앞면 왼쪽에 사무용 건물이 나와 있고 그 오른쪽 뒤에 일본인이 거주하던 건물이 배치되어 있는데, 두 건물을 복도로 연결하였다. 근대기 일본식 주택의 배치 방식과 공간적 특징이 나타나 있으며, 일제강점기 일본인 농장주의 생활양식과 이들의 농촌수탈 모습을 잘 보여주고 있다.

영문 해설 내용

이 가옥은 1920년대에 건립된 것으로, 일본인 농장주 구마모토 리헤이가 소유했었다. 그가 전라북도 지역에 소유하고 있던 농장은 일제강점기 한국 내에서 최대의 규모였다.

건물 앞쪽에 돌출된 부분은 사무용 공간으로 사용되었고, 뒤쪽은 거주용 공간이었다. 두 건물은 복도로 연결되었다.
