해설문

국문

풍남문은 조선 시대에 전라감영이 있었던 전주를 둘러싼 전주성의 남쪽 문이다. 원래 전주성에는 동서남북 네 곳에 문이 있었지만 세 개는 철거되고 풍남문만 남았다 영조 때 전라도 관찰사 조현명의 기록에 따르면 영조 10년(1734)에 전주부성을 크게 고쳐 쌓으면서 이 문을 명견루(明見樓)라 하였다고 한다. 이후 영조 43년(1767)에 불타자 관찰사 홍낙인이 다시 짓고 풍남문이라 하였다.

풍남문이라는 이름은 중국 한나라를 세운 유방이 태어난 풍패(豊沛)에서 따온 것이다. 조선 왕조의 발원지인 전주를 풍패에 비유하여 풍패향이라 불렀으며, 풍패향 전주의 남문이라는 뜻으로 풍남문이라 하였다.

문루* 2층의 남쪽 면에는 전주가 조선 왕조의 고향임을 의미하는 ‘풍남문’, 북쪽 면에는 전라도 행정 중심지로서의 의미인 ‘호남제일성’(湖南第一城)이라고 쓴 현판이 걸려 있다. 또한 성문 밖에는 외부의 침입을 막으려고 만든 반원형의 옹성(甕城)이 있다.

영문 해설 내용

풍남문은 조선시대 전라감영이 있던 전주성의 남문이다. 원래 전주성에는 동서남북 네 곳에 문이 있었지만, 세 개는 20세기 초 도시개발에 따라 철거되고 풍남문만 남았다.

전주성은 1388년에 처음 쌓았고, 1597년 정유재란 때 파괴되어 1734년에 대규모로 고쳐 지었다. 1767년 큰 화재로 남문과 서문이 모두 소실된 후 이듬해 새로 지었고, 당시의 전라도 관찰사였던 홍낙인(1729-1777)이 풍남문이라는 이름을 붙였다.

풍남문은 ‘풍패향의 남쪽문’이라는 뜻이다. 풍패는 원래 중국 한나라 고조(高祖)의 고향을 가리키는 말로, ‘제왕의 고향’을 의미한다. 전주가 ‘풍패향’이라고 불리게 된 것은 조선을 건국한 태조의 조상이 대대로 전주에 살았기 때문이다.
