임고서원 은행나무는 서원이 부래산에 있었던 때부터 심겨 있던 나무이다. 임진왜란으로 없어진 서원을 이곳에 다시 지을 때 함께 옮겨 심었다고 한다. 현재 나이는 약 500년 정도이며, 나이에 비해 건강한 노거수*이다.

나무의 크기는 높이가 약 30m, 가슴 높이의 둘레가 5.95m이고, 수관** 폭은 동서 방향으로 약 22m, 남북 방향으로 약 21m에 이른다.

임고서원 은행나무는 오랜 세월 조상들의 관심과 보살핌 속에 살아온 나무로, 생물학적 보존 가치가 인정되어 기념물로 지정하여 보호하고 있다.
