해설문

국문

도호부는 조선 시대 지방 행정 기관의 하나로 인천이 도호부로 승격된 것은 세조 5년인 1459년이다. 인천도호부관아의 건축 시기는 정확히 알려져 있지 않으나 강희맹姜希孟이 쓴 인천부승호기仁川府陞號記에 1424년 이미 객사가 있었던 것으로 기록되어 있어 최소한 그 이전에 도호부가 설치된 것으로 추정된다. 그리고 객사를 보수하는 과정에서 발견된 지붕의 기와에 ‘강희 16년’이라는 글씨가 새겨져 있어 1677년에 중수된 것임을 알 수 있다. 1950년 문학초등학교를 세우면서 관아의 건물 가운데 객사와 동헌 일부만을 교정 안의 현재 자리로 옮겼다. 객사는 왕을 상징하는 전패殿牌를 모셔 예를 올리고, 사신이나 관리들의 숙소로 사용된 곳으로 20칸의 규모였으나 현재는 중앙부의 정면 3칸과 측면 2칸만이 남아 있다.
