해설문

국문

향교는 고려 말 이후 나라에서 유학을 가르치기 위해 각 지방에 세운 학교이다. 유학자들의 위패를 모시고 봄 가을로 제사를 지내는 사당인 대성전과 동무·서무가 있으며, 학생들이 공부하는 강당인 명륜당과 생활하는 기숙사인 동재·서재가 있다. 향교 입구에는 이곳이 엄숙한 공간임을 알려주는 홍살문*과 하마비**가 있다.

조선 초기에는 각 고을마다 하나씩 향교를 세웠는데 익산향교는 태조 7년(1398)에 창건했다고 한다. 임진왜란 때 화재로 소실되어 인조 7년(1629)에 다시 지었다. 대성전에는 공자를 비롯한 중국과 우리나라 유학자들의 위패를 모시고 있다. 다른 지역에 있는 향교 대성전보다 화려하고 건축수법이 특색있어 가치가 있다. 현재 익산향교 입구에 세워져 있는 여러 기의 비석들은 옛 익산군 관아터 주변에서 옮겨온 것이다.
