Tomb and Stele of Yi Yang-u

This is the tomb and stele of Yi Yang-u (1346-1417), a relative of the Joseon royal family. Yi’s wife, Lady Park, is also buried in this tomb.

Yi Yang-u was a nephew of Yi Seong-gye (later King Taejo, r. 1392-1398), who was the founding king of the Joseon dynasty (1392-1910). He supported King Taejo's fifth son Yi Bang-won (later King Taejong, r. 1400-1418) in the political insurrection of 1398 over the right to the throne. In 1408, Yi went to Ming China as a royal envoy and, on his way back, saved some Joseon people who had been captured and taken to the Liaodong area.

The stele, which records Yi's life and achievements, was erected in 1908, and is a replacement for an original stele which was destroyed during the Japanese invasions of 1592-1598. The epitaph was composed by civil official Yi U-myeon (1850-?) and was calligraphed by calligrapher Yun Yong-gu (1853-1939), both of the late Joseon period.
