Yi studied law at Boseong College and established Cheongseong School in his hometown, Pocheon. He highlighted loyalty for the nation in his education. After the March First Movement, he defected to China and participated in underground anti-Japanese movement, establishing a school and a youth association. In 1928, he created a consumers’ cooperative society in Pocheon and devoted himself in education, teaching at Ganghwa school and Gwangmyeong School in Gimcheon. After the liberation of Korea in 1945, he joined the Korean Resistance Party as one of the founding members. He also served as a county governor of Yeongyang, and the head of Byeongsan Middle School. He was once imprisoned for accusing the wrongdoings of President Syngman Rhee. In 1963, he was posthumously conferred a presidential citation as an independence patriot.

해설문

국문

포천 출신의 독립지사이자 교육자 이범영(李範英, 1890~1955)의 공적을 기리기 위해 1982년에 세운 비이다.

이범영은 보성전문 법과를 졸업하고 고향인 이곳 포천에 청성학교를 설립하여 충의를 교훈으로 민족혼을 고취하는 교육사업을 실시했다. 3.1운동 후 중국에 망명, 3.1학당 설립운동과 대동청년당 결성에 참여하여 항일 지하 운동을 전개했다. 1928년 민족자본의 육성을 위해 포천소비조합을 창립했고, 그 후 강화학교, 김천 광명학교 등에서 민족교육에 전념했다. 8.15 해방 후 한국독립당의 창당 발기인으로 참여하고, 영양군수·병산중학교장 등을 거쳐 고향 마을에 화산고등학교를 설립했다. 성균관대학교를 세운 김창숙(金昌淑, 1879~1962) 등과 함께 이승만의 옳지 않음을 규탄해 한때 옥고를 치르기도 하였다. 1963년 독립유공 대통령표창이 추서되었다.
