해설문

국문

보살은 부처를 도와 중생을 구제하고 불도의 깨달음을 얻은 자로서, 관세음보살, 대세지보살, 보현보살, 지장보살 등 수많은 보살들이 있다.

관덕동 석조 보살 좌상은 닳아서 없어진 부분이 많아서 보살의 이름은 알 수 없다. 가슴 앞에 있는 목걸이와 유(U)자형 장식, 팔찌를 통해 보살상임을 알 수 있다. 보살상의 머리카락은 작은 소라 모양을 붙여 놓은 듯한 나발(螺髮)이고, 정수리에는 작지만 육계(肉髻)*가 분명하게 표현되어 있다. 한때 부서져 넘어졌던 머리를 다시 붙여 두었으나, 목에는 세 개의 주름이 뚜렷하게 남아 있다. 가슴 한가운데는 구슬을 꿰어 만든 장신구가 길게 드리워져 있으며 가장자리에는 짧게 만든 장신구들이 여러 개 있다. 얼굴이 많이 깨져 전체적인 인상을 확인하기 어려우나, 이마는 좁고 얼굴형은 갸름하다.

전체적으로 결가부좌***한 신체에 나타난 안정감, 얇은 옷 속으로 비치는 부드러운 굴곡, 갸름한 얼굴 등에서 8세기 통일 신라 불상의 특징이 잘 나타나고 있다. 많이 닳아서 없어졌지만 가슴 가운데 영락(瓔珞)이라고 하는 구슬을 꿰어 만든 장식 등 섬세한 조각 솜씨가 뛰어난 작품으로, 신라 시대 불상을 연구하는 데 귀중한 자료이다.


  • 육계: 부처의 정수리에 있는 뼈가 솟아 저절로 상투 모양이 된 것. 인간이나 천상에서 볼 수 없는 일이므로 이렇게 이른다.
  • 결가부좌: 앉는 법의 한가지로 오른쪽 발을 우선 왼쪽 허벅지 위에 얹고 다음에 왼쪽발을 오른쪽 위에 얹어 앉고 발을 좌우의 허벅지의 위에 얹어 앉는 법을 말한다.
