의병승장비는 1592년(선조 25) 8월 18일에 치러진 제2차 금산전투에서 의병장 조헌(趙憲)과 함께 순절한 승병장 영규(靈圭)대사와 승병들을 추모하기 위해 1840년(헌종 6)에 금산 보석사 입구에 세운 비이다.

비의 몸체는 높이 243cm, 폭 83cm, 두께 39cm이며, 비각*의 오른쪽에는 의병승장비의 내용을 한글로 풀이하여 청동판에 새긴 영규대사 의선각비가 있다.

의선각비에는 1839년(헌종 5) 5월 금산군수 조취영이 비를 세웠고, 우의정 조인영이 비문을 지었으며, 충청도 관찰사 조헌영이 비각을 세웠다는 내용이 전한다.

비의 앞면에는 큰 글자로 ‘의병승장’이라고 새겼으나 자획이 심하게 훼손된 상태이고, 왼쪽 면에는 창건화주 낙봉대인 등 비를 세울 때 참여했던 사람들의 이름이 기록되어 있고, 오른쪽 면에는 ‘의병승장’이라는 글자를 쓴 사람이 창녕위** 김병주라는 내용이 기록되어 있다.

일제강점기인 1940년에 일본 경찰이 비각을 부수고 비문의 글자를 훼손하여 땅에 묻었으나 1945년 광복 이후에 다시 세웠다. 1979년 비각을 세웠고, 1980년 영규대사 국역비를 건립하였다.

영문

Stele of Monk Yeonggyu

This stele was erected to honor Monk Yeonggyu (?~1592) who was killed in action during the Japanese invasion of 1592-1598.

Yeonggyu was the first to rally monks to fight at that time. In 1592, he led hundreds of monk soldiers and launched a successful attack in cooperation with the civilian army to take back Cheongjuseong Fortress in today's Chungcheongbuk-do Province which had become occupied by the Japanese military. But about two weeks later, he and the troops he was leading died at a battle in the Geumsan area.

This stele was originally erected in front of Boseoksa Temple in 1839. However, in 1940, during Japanese colonial rule (1910-1945), the Japanese police destroyed the stele pavilion, damaged the inscription on the stele, and buried it underground. In 1945, after liberation, the stele was unearthed and erected again, and a new protective pavilion was built in 1979.

The four large characters engraved on the front mean “monk commander of the righteous army.” On one side of the stele is the inscription of the names of people who contributed to the stele construction, and on the other side is an inscription that states that the four characters on the front were calligraphed by Kim Byeong-ju (1827-1887), the son-in-law of King Sunjo (r. 1800-1834).

영문 해설 내용

1592년 임진왜란 때에 순절한 승병장 영규대사를 추모하는 비이다.

영규대사는 승려로서는 처음으로 의병을 일으켰으며, 1592년 수백 명의 승병을 이끌고 의병과 합세하여 청주성을 탈환하였다. 그러나 약 2주 후 금산에서 벌어진 전투에서 순절하였다.

이 비는 원래 1839년 보석사 입구에 세워졌으나, 일제강점기인 1940년에 일본 경찰이 비각을 부수고 비문을 훼손하여 땅에 묻었다. 해방이 된 1945년 묻어있던 비를 꺼내 다시 세웠고, 비를 보호하기 위한 비각을 1979년에 세웠다.

앞면에는 큰 글자로 ‘의병승장’이라고 새겼고, 왼쪽 면에는 비를 세울 때 참여했던 사람들의 이름이 기록되어 있다. 오른쪽 면에는 앞면의 글자를 순조의 부마인 김병주가 썼다고 적혀 있다.
