해설문

국문

우저서원(牛渚書院)은 중봉 조헌(1544~1592)의 생가가 있던 곳으로 선생을 기리기 위해 인조 26년(1648)에 세워졌고, 숙종 1년(1675)에 “우저(牛渚)”라는 사액을 받았다. 이후 헌종 12년(1671)에 우저서원으로 선액(宣額)되었고, 순조 34년(1834)에 중건, 1973~1976년에 전면 보수되었다.

서원은 지방의 유학교육과 선현 배향을 위해 지어진 교육기관으로, 고종 5년(1868)경 흥선대원군의 서원철폐 시 훼철되지 않고 존속한 47개 서원 중 하나이다.

조헌은 김포에서 출생하여 율곡 이이의 문인으로 명종 22년(1567)에 급제하여 통진현감, 호조·예조·공조 좌랑, 성균관 전적, 사헌부 감찰, 종묘 서령 등 많은 관직을 지냈으며, 임진왜란이 일어나자 옥천에서 의병을 일으켜 공을 세우고, 의병 1,700여 명을 모아 영규(靈圭)의 승군(僧軍)과 함께 청주성을 탈환하기도 하였다. 이후 왜군에 맞서 금산에서 전투를 벌이다 전사하였다.

우저서원의 공간배치는 학문의 공간을 전면에, 제례의 공간을 후면에 배치한 전형적인 전학후묘(前學後廟)의 구조로 건물은 목조 단층 와즙건물인 위패를 봉안한 사당, 강당인 이택당(麗澤堂), 동재(東齋), 서재(西齋) 등으로 이루어져 있다. 본당 앞의 내삼문과 강당 앞의 외삼문은 솟을대문으로 되어 있으며, 사당 왼쪽의 비각에는 조헌선생유허추모비가 있다. 해마다 음력 2월과 조헌의 기일인 음력 8월 18일에 이곳에서 제사를 지낸다.

우저서원은 문신이자 학자인 조헌(1544-1592)을 기리기 위해 1648년 조헌의 생가 터에 세워졌다. 1675년 사액되었고, 1834년에 중건되었다. 19세기 말 서원철폐령으로 전국의 거의 모든 서원과 사당이 철거되었는데, 이때 철거되지 않고 존속한 47개 서원 중 하나이다. 1973-1976년에 전면 보수되었다.

조헌은 1567년 과거에 급제한 뒤 여러 관직을 지냈다. 임진왜란이 일어나자 의병 1,700여 명을 모아, 영규대사(?-1592)의 승군과 함께 청주성을 탈환하기도 하였다. 이후 왜군에 맞서 금산에서 전투를 벌이다 전사하였다.

우저서원은 앞쪽의 강학공간과 뒤쪽의 제향공간으로 이루어져 있다. 앞쪽에서부터 정문, 동서재, 강당인 이택당, 내삼문, 사당이 있으며, 사당 앞의 비각에는 조헌을 추모하기 위해 1617년에 건립된 비석이 있다. 사당에서는 해마다 음력 2월과 조헌의 기일인 음력 8월 18일에 제사를 지낸다.
