Yongheunggung was a royal residence where King Cheoljong (r. 1849-1863), the 25th king of the Joseon dynasty, lived before he became king. When the preceding king, Heonjong (r. 1834-1849), died without an heir, Cheoljong, who was a member of the royal Yi family, was selected to become king. At the time, he had been living in a thatched-roof house on this property in Ganghwa, because his family was exiled here when his brother was involved in treason five years prior in 1844.
