Sakyamuni Buddha is in the center with Bhaishajyaguru, the medicine Buddha of the Eastern World, on his left and Amitabha Buddha, who is of the Western Pure Land, on his right. The triad Buddhas enshrined in this way, called the Buddhas of the Three Worlds, signify the presence of the Buddha in all the places where there exist human suffering and unhappiness from which the Buddha will liberate humanity by order and rule. The Triad Buddhas are the biggest (5.65 m) among all the clay Buddha statues in Korea. Moreover, carved with serene faces and the flowing trails of a Buddhist priest’s robe, they can be called the representative clay statues of pre-modern Korea.

Various items were discovered hidden inside the Buddha statue in the center, including a detailed record of the carving history of the three Buddha statues dating to 1641 and relics such as Buddhist scriptures and three containers of votive objects. The detailed record includes content about the Manchurian invasion (1637)⑦, which led to the humiliating peace treaty with the Qing dynasty. Crown prince Sohyeon (1612-1645), who was in Shenyang as a hostage, and Prince Bongnim (King Hyojong, 1619-1659) returned to their home country as soon as possible. The statue’s composition record contains the prayers for happiness in the other world for the officers and men who perished fighting the Japanese during Japanese invasion of Korea in 1592 and the Manchurian invasion. Once, Crown prince Sohyeon returned for a moment and stayed at his home in Seoul. At that time he heard a rumor that Songgwangsa was seeking donations of gold to re-paint the triad Buddha in the Great Buddha Hall. As a result, he ordered the military garrison in Shenyang to cultivate a farm, the profits of which were given to Songgwangsa, allowing it to re-paint the triad Buddha statues in gold.

Clay Seated Sakyamuni Buddha Triad and Excavated Relics of Songgwangsa Temple, Wanju

2020

This Buddhist triad depicts Sakyamuni (the Historical Buddha) in the center with Bhaisajyaguru (the Medicine Buddha) and Amitabha (the Buddha of the Western Paradise) to either side. The principal buddha and attendant buddhas, respectively, measure a massive 5.5 m and 5.2 m in height, making this clay triad one of the largest in Korea.

The triad was made in 1641 to wish for the longevity of the king and queen and also for a safe return of Crown Prince Sohyeon (1612-1645) and Prince Bongnim (later King Hyojong, b. 1619, r. 1649-1659)) who were taken as hostages to Qing China following the Manchu invasion of 1637. It was made by Cheongheon and 17 other sculptor-monks with funds from the eminent monk Gakseong (1575-1660), who is known for leading the revival of Buddhism during the late period of the Joseon dynasty (1392-1910). It is thus considered a masterpiece that reflects the will to overcome a national crisis.

When the statues were repaired in 1993, 12 relics were discovered inside. They include records about the creation of the statues, containers of votive objects, mirrors, and golden bottles. Among them, the records about the statues’ creation and containers of votive objects were designated as a cultural heritage together with the triad.
