The Four Guardian Kings were originally deities from ancient India, but after the emergence of Buddhism, they took on the role of protecting the Buddha and his teachings while standing on Mount Meru and watching over the four cardinal directions. They also have the duty to observe whether people are following Buddha’s teaching and to guide them on the right path. Large statues of the Four Guardian Kings are located inside Cheonwangmun, meaning "Gate of the Guardian Kings," which is customarily the third gate along the path leading to the main worship area of a Buddhist temple.

The Four Guardian Kings enshrined at Cheonwangmun Gate of Songgwangsa Temple were made in 1649, and are the oldest clay four guarding kings of the Joseon period (1392-1910). On the right facing Daeungjeon Hall are the guardian king of the south holding a sword in his right hand and the guardian king of the east holding a korean mandolin in his hands. On the left are the guardian king of the west holding a dragon and a wish-fulfilling jewel in his hands and the guardian king of the north holding a type of Buddhist flag called dang and a pagoda in his hands. They are all wearing a splendid jewelled crown and armor, and they have at their feet small statues that represent the evil spirits.

These statues were made in 1649, making them among the oldest extant statues of the Four Guardian Kings. On the right are Virudhaka, the guardian king of the south, and Dhritarashtra, the guardian king of the east, who hold a sword and a mandolin, respectively. On the left are Virupaksha, the guardian king of the west, and Vaishravana, the guardian king of the north, who hold a dragon and wish-fulfilling jewel and a flagpole and pagoda, respectively. They all wear splendid jewelled crowns and armor. At their feet are small statues that represent the evil spirits.

There are not many large clay statues of four guardian kings left, so the Clay Four Guardian Kings of Songgwangsa Temple are a valuable resource for studying such statues of the late Joseon period (1392-1910).
